Korean war veteran, Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood) fills his days with household repairs, booze and monthly trips to his barber. Though his late wife’s final wish was for him to make a confession with the parish priest, for Walt there’s nothing to confess. And no one he trusts enough to confess to other than his dog, Daisy.
But his life changes when he met Thao (Bee Vhang). It is one of the most unfortunate time when Thao is forced by his cousin and his gang to steal Walt's Gran Torino. But unfortunately, Walt almost caught Thao and the plan is unsuccessful. Little did they know that this encounter will take a twisted turn when Walt is challenged to confront his life's ghost and prejudices.
Clint Eastwood as a director did a great job. After winning the Best Director and Best Motion Picture back in 2004, he is undeniably a living legend. As an actor, he exhibits a little bit of his dirty Harry persona and you can really feel the nostalgia in every scene. Joined by newcomers like Bee Vhang and Ahney Her, the trio established a chemistry that no other Director or actor can do.
Story is well written. Though the movie tackle serious racial issues, it never show any insulting scenes that other could find very offending. I also commend the writer and the research team for showing very intricate details in South East Asian culture. From costume, to food, interior design, language and customs. And to all action film junkies, this movie is filled with Clint Eastwood beating the hell up over bad guys scenes. Though those are the closest action thing you'll ever see in the movie because this is not an action flick. On the other hand, the ending is unpredictable and all of us are shocked of how the story ends.
The movie is a must watch. Reason -- it stars and directed by Clint Eastwood. This reason alone is enough for you to watch this film.
So if you haven't watch it, go to the nearest cinema, I think it is still showing. Spare some money there and you will never regret it.
Gran Torino is brought to you by Warner Bros. Pictures.
