Diary of a Wimpy Kid Cast Revealed
Zachary Gordon takes Greg Heffley to a 3-dimensional world from the pages of the best selling illustrated “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series by Jeff Kinney to a major motion picture from 20th Century Fox.
Greg (Gordon) is a wisecracking, self-centered middle-schooler whose life is filled with suburban misadventures. Through the prodding of his overly enthusiastic mom, he started to keep a diary, journal as Greg would rather put it over the course of his academic year in middle school. His journal would then become his gateway to a world full of his thoughts and imagination as he chronicles his day-to-day survival in middle school through his superlative musings and unique hand-drawn cartoons. Greg, being your average, overly imaginative middle school student fills his journal complaining about bullies when he’s not bullying others and works harder on avoiding chores and homework than doing them.
Crammed between an older and younger brother, a clueless yet loyal best friend, an overly enthusiastic mom, a frustrated dad and a host of frenemies around him, Greg immediately appealed to every kid who are growing up and have just been through growing up. Jeff Kinney, the books’ author relates Greg’s misadventures are loosely based on his childhood in suburban Maryland though he wasn’t as wimpy as Greg. After graduation, he aspired to become a syndicated cartoonist but ended up as a designer of online games for a kids website where he first posted Greg’s diary entries. After sometime, Kinney thought of a book to get his cartoons published. Since then, he has received letters from parents and teachers thanking him that his series has taken the word “reluctant” out of “reluctant readers.”
Kinney stresses that Greg is a deeply flawed protagonist. “I think adults who voice complaints about Greg’s shortcomings are missing the joke. Kids get that Greg isn’t perfect, and I think that why they like him,” Kinney explains.
The movie also stars Steve Zahn as Frank, Greg’s dad; Rachael Harris as Susan, Greg’s mom; Devon Bostick as Rodrick, Greg’s menacing brother and Robert Capron as Rowley, Greg’s best friend.
All-out family fun on April 3 (Saturday) when “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” opens in theaters from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
