End of an Era and a Blazing Beginning: Narnia 3 Movie Review
After their first adventures in "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and "Prince Caspian", once again the Pevensie siblings are back in the enchanted kingdom of Narnia for yet another quest. But this time only the youngest of the four returned, Lucy (Georgie Henley) and Edmund (Skandar Keynes). Unfortunately they are joined by their annoying cousin Eustace (Will Poulter) who is totally culture shocked when he see the out of this world characters of Narnia. Though divided by different personal desires, all of them must struggle to face them and work together as they journey to the farthest depth of the kingdom on aboard The great ship, Dawn Treader.
Compared to the first movie, "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is obviously the most matured one. The fact that Lucy and Edmund are all grown up, they are now on the verge of discovering adulthood on the most engaging and dangerous Narnian adventure since their first visit. This movie shines far more than its predecessor "Prince Caspian" which I believe the weakest installment on the three.
Among the characters on this film, Eustace played by Will Poulter stole all the spotlight from the Pevensies. Will's magnificent portrayal of Lucy and Edmund's cousin really amuses me. He is extremely obnoxious, annoying and arrogant but undeniably one of the well loved character among the lineup because he is funny and spontaneous. Too bad, Ben Barnes once again didn't impress me. As much as I'm concerned, he is already a King and I really didn't see that on his character. He still acts like somebody who don't have the authority and lacks the commanding aura which pushed his role behind others including those supporting ones.
Technically this movie is an improvement from the first two. It clearly stepped out of the comfort zone and pushed its boundaries to a darker tone. Production design and fight choreographies are also well executed providing the lush, artistic and gorgeous imagery on every shot. Riding on the 3D bandwagon, Narnia 3's 3D is not overwhelming. For somebody like me who didn't really like watching movies on 3D, the movie is really far to what will I consider the perfect 3D experience. The movie is brilliant as it is and didn't need to be enjoyed with a 3D glasses because it is what actually makes the movie bad.
In a nut shell, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" could be one of the strongest installment among the franchise (second to the first) which perfectly ends the Pevensie Trilogy that we all loved. And at the same time it is also a good beginning for the new era of adventurers like Eustace and his future comrades.
Directed by Michael Apted, “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” is a 20th Century Fox film distributed by Warner Bros. and set to premiere today (December 3) on Digital 3D cinemas all over the Metro and December 9 on all 2D conventional cinemas.
