2011 is another year for super hero movies and as a primary serving, Columbia pictures is happy to bring back heroes who are almost lost in time. After its popularity in in 1930's as a radio program, film in 40's and a pulp TV series in 60's, Green Hornet is now just a shadow of all popular super heroes geeks love.
Premise:
“The Green Hornet” revolves around Britt Reid (Rogen), the son of LA’s most prominent and respected media magnate and perfectly happy to maintain a directionless existence on the party scene – until his father (Wilkinson) mysteriously dies, leaving Britt his vast media empire. Striking an unlikely friendship with one of his father’s more industrious and inventive employees, Kato (Chou), they see their chance to do something meaningful for the first time in their lives: fight crime. To get close to the criminals, they come up with the perfect cover: they’ll pose as criminals themselves. Protecting the law by breaking it, Britt becomes the vigilante The Green Hornet as he and Kato hit the streets.
As a kid who grew up on 80's cartoons and Japanese tv series, I admit there are only few times when I saw Green Hornet when some TV networks tried to show the reruns. But maybe 60's TV series don't appeal that much on my age so basically I dropped watching the show. Fast forward two decades later, I'm happy when Columbia announced that they will be remaking the series and reintroducing the vigilante to the new generation.
Green Hornet could be not as good as other super hero films, still it is quite a good watch because it is a the return of something that defines the genre that most of us love. But I think the movie could be much better if they lessen the humor part. According to my research Green Hornet should have a life as dark as Batman. Well they don't need to be as dark as "The Dark Knight", they can inject some jokes on SOME scenes but not on EVERY scene, surprisingly Seth Rogen's sense of humor works perfectly between him and Jay Chou (Kato) but taming it down will help audience not to take Green Hornet as a joke but a serious crime fighter.
Bottom line Green Hornet is a fresh comeback of a classic. A must watch to everybody who likes super hero flicks and those who just want to have a few laughs while relaxing on a weekend movie date. Now showing in all cinemas nationwide, distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.
