Last June, a trailer for a certain Mortal Kombat: Rebirth circulates the web. At first it is not clear if the trailer is created for an upcoming video game or for a new movie. But it appears that the trailer is actually a pitch video for a new (reboot) Mortal Kombat film. The film is directed by Kevin Tancharoen (Fame) with an approximate of $7,500 budget. The film garnered a positive review all over the net. In fact the video is too good that even Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon praised it and tagged it as a possible and legitimate alternate universe for Mortal Kombat. But after that everythign about the production becomes quiet and in months, no new or significant development regarding the project surfaced... not until January 14, 2011.
Last Friday, Bloody Disgusting reports that Tancharoen has been given a greenlit by Warner Bros. to produce a 10 episode online miniseries under the penning of Tancharoen himself, Todd Helbing, and Aaron Helbing. Michael Jai White (The dark Knight, Spawn) returns to reprise his role, Jackson Briggs but too bad other characters from the video are set to be replaced including Ian Dale who plays Hanzo Hasashi a.k.a. Scorpion.
There are no further details on how long will every episode run but I hope we can get at least 30 minutes of pure action every week. I'm also quite bothered on how the series has been described of having Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn rule a parallel universe. Sounds very "Fringe".
Oh well I hope the series will come out as good as the pitch trailer. Let's cross our fingers. Now I leave you with the pitch trailer that came out last June. Enjoy.
